Is It Time To Transform Your Career and Create Your Personal Freedom by Starting An Online Business?
I want to share with you the story about how I went from working a full-time corporate job to online business entrepreneur…
For years, my “normal” was the traditional 9-to-5 lifestyle, climbing the corporate ladder at global fashion brands such as Burberry, Ralph Lauren, and Kate Spade. By the age of 26, I was managing a £380 million business. But something was missing Freedom.
When I talk about freedom, there’s no “one size fits all” to what that Freedom looks like. It most likely looks completely different for you than it does for me – it’s a very personal vision. Maybe it’s financial freedom – the ability to spend without constantly worrying about bills. Maybe it’s time for freedom – more hours back in the day to pick up your kids from school. Or like me, you might want location freedom – the ability to work and live anywhere in the world.
For me I created this Freedom by starting an Online Business – in this post I will share with you the steps I took to start working online.
Understanding Your Personal Definition of Freedom
Here’s the truth: entrepreneurship isn’t for everybody. But achieving freedom? That’s possible for anyone who truly wants it and, more importantly, puts their mind to it. Finding freedom doesn’t happen by luck or from overnight success… It’s about strategic actions and, most importantly, the right mindset.
I didn’t enter entrepreneurship thinking I could conquer everything. In fact, I never really intended to be an entrepreneur, so I came into it knowing I had SO much to learn.. and I basically had to “fake it till I make it”. And some people will tell you that’s the wrong thing to do, but do you know what? That approach worked for me…
Mainly because it helped me test and do things I wouldn’t normally do, which led me to develop a mindset that believed in possibility… I started realizing the more I pushed myself into doing something I wouldn’t normally do, the more I was realizing what was possible for me…
I also started to realize my motivation for starting a business and finding freedom wasn’t just financial – it was about creating a lifestyle that aligned with my goals and the way I wanted to feel waking up every single day.
The Power of Mindset & Expansion…
Now when it comes to creating more freedom, or starting a business, many will argue it’s only possible for those with some kind of “privilige”, and whilst I will always admit that I come from a very privileged situation that has allowed me to take more risks than others, that has definitely supported me along the way. BUT I have also seen people who haven’t achieved very similar levels of freedom and been so inspired by their personal journey, coming from very humble beginnings…
In particular, I always remember the story of a girl I met who came from a tiny village in India, who frankly grew up with absolutely nothing. She wasn’t even allowed to go to school because she was a girl. But after seeing visitors, in her town, she had this burning desire to create something different for herself, a different reality to that of her parents, or the one she grew up with…
She would travel five to six hours to the city just to be around educated people. She taught herself English and maths, read books, and studied independently. Her goal was to be “smart enough” to get a scholarship to university. And guess what? She did. Not just any university – one in the US. Now she works in finance and has been able to earn crazy amounts of money and lived all over the world in London, Bali, and Costa Rica.
What allowed her to do this? Expansion!
She was SHOWN what could be possible for her if she put her mind to something, which led her to see her goal super clearly and find the right path for her to achieve it.
Proof that it doesn’t matter what background you come from; if you have the right mindset, you really can do anything.
One of my goals is to help not only show you how to achieve the freedom you desire but also expand you into what could be possible for you by helping you see to believe it to be true and get you super clear on how you can make it happen for yourself.
Choosing the Right Online Business Model For Your Freedom Goal…
A big mistake I see entrepreneurs make: they build businesses that completely contradict the lifestyle they want. You can’t say you want time freedom, for example, and then create a business that requires you to work 24/7.
If time freedom is your goal, you’re going to want to explore online business opportunities that consider:
- The amount of time freedom you want to achieve
- How many hours a day do you want to/can you realistically work
- Scalability and flexibility of the business model
- Potential for location-independent work
- Your personal commitments.
A good example of this would be one of my ex-clients who started an e-commerce children’s brand thinking it would free her up to spend more time with her child – actually given the fact she had very little money to invest in resource and support to build her business she ended up spending LESS time with her little boy, and in turn resented the very business she started. Quitting in year 2, realizing it was never going to get her closer to that goal.
Instead, what she could have done was pivot and adjust her business to work for the lifestyle she wanted to achieve, which would have been possible.
My own experience taught me that the business model that works in one life stage might not serve you in another, so staying flexible, be willing to redesign your approach, and always keep your lifestyle goals at the forefront.
Even better if you are right at the beginning to consider what you want for your life from day one as the chances of your creating a business you love and that works for the life you want to achieve is going to be way higher.
Your Next Steps Towards Your Online Business Freedom
I want to be clear here: freedom does not mean becoming a “digital nomad” – although that was what freedom looked like for me, it probably doesn’t for you. Your version of freedom is unique to you. Maybe that’s having the flexibility to work from your holiday home in Spain every few months, or being able to take your afternoons for yourself instead of your company calls, or even earning enough money to save for a house deposit.
In my opinion, the best and most accessible way to create that freedom for yourself is by starting an online business… That could be online courses, freelancing, digital products, e-commerce, or, like me, a service business.
