Starting an online business is very exciting, but let’s be honest – it can also feel SUPER overwhelming.

You might already have a business idea, and you probably want to start that business to create some more freedom in your life, whether that’s time freedom, financial freedom, or location freedom. But when you go to take action to set that business up – the questions start rolling in: What’s am I going to offer? Who are my ideal customers? How do I turn this idea into a sustainable business model that not only makes me money, but gives me the freedom lifestyle I want?

That’s a big question right there.

Because honestly, most business ideas are pretty easy to start and figure out how it can make you money, but it can be much harder to set the business up with your freedom goals in mind.

If that’s where you’re at right now, you’re not alone. The truth is, building your first online business isn’t about rushing into creating the “perfect” model. It’s about designing a business model that supports the lifestyle you actually want to live. Step 1: Make Sure Your Business Model Fits With Your Lifestyle

One of the biggest mistakes I see when it comes to business development is founders building a business model that doesn’t allow them to live the lifestyle they want.

For example, if your dream is location freedom and you want to be able to work remotely whilst traveling, building a business that requires you to be physically tied to one place (like e-commerce), quite obviously, doesn’t make sense.

Likewise, if you want time freedom and desire to only work 20 hours a week so you can spend more time at your favourite yoga class, out in nature, or with family, creating a model that relies on you trading time for money every day (like freelance social media management), will burn you out pretty quickly.

Or, maybe you want financial freedom so you can splurge on your iced coffee every day, but you’re trying to get there with a PDF ebook that sells for less than $10, without a budget for marketing.

So instead of asking, “What business should I build?” start asking, “What lifestyle do I want, and how can my online business give me that?”

Step 2: Focus On One Thing To Cecome The “Go-To” Business For

When you’re passionate about multiple things, it’s tempting to want to offer everything at once,, thinking you’ve got more chances of enticing someone to buy from you… Maybe you’ve studied health, mindset, coaching, yoga, or marketing, and you think your offer has to include it all.

But the truth is, the fastest way to grow your online business is to start with one clear problem you can solve for your ideal client.

Think about it: people don’t go online searching for “a blend of psychology, wellness, and mindset coaching.” They search for something specific, like “how to reduce anxiety” or “how to start a profitable side hustle.”

Your business model becomes so much clearer when you stop trying to serve everyone for everything and instead focus on being known for one thing first. Become an expert and the go-to solution for that specific thing, then from there, you can always expand into more offers, but clarity always comes first.

Step 3: Start Understanding Your “Why”

One of the most overlooked parts of starting an online business is getting clear on your why. But without it, your business development journey can feel disconnected, overwhelming, or misaligned.

This is a really important step in my signature programme The Freedom Model Method, where we dig deeper than surface-level goals like “I want financial freedom” or “I want to quit my 9-5 job.” It’s asking yourself: Why do I want to quit my 9-5 job? What happens if I were able to it? How does this impact my life? What does the future look like if I’m able to achieve this goal?

Because here’s the thing – your business model isn’t just a strategy for making money online. It’s the foundation of your future lifestyle.

Whether you’re craving time freedom, creative autonomy, or the ability to travel and work from anywhere, your why is going to be the compass that helps you make aligned decisions at every stage of business development.

When things feel uncertain (and they will), reconnecting to your why is what will keep you going. It reminds you that this online business isn’t just about making sales – it’s about building a business that supports the life you actually want to live.

Step 4: Choose The Right Business Model For You

Now that you’ve started mapping out your version of freedom, it’s time to get strategic about how you’ll deliver your value. In the world of online business, choosing the right business model is a huge part of business development – and it needs to align with both your strengths and your lifestyle goals.

The good news? You’re not stuck with one model forever. Your business can evolve as you do. But at the beginning, simplicity is your superpower.

Here are a few powerful online business models you can build from:

Coaching or consulting – If you love working 1:1 or want to position yourself as an expert, this is a great way to start building authority, confidence, and income fast.
Online courses or digital products – Ideal for those who want to create passive income streams and scale their reach without trading time for money.
Group programs or educational trainings – Great for delivering transformation at scale while still maintaining a personal connection with your clients.
Agency model – Perfect if you’re skilled in a done-for-you service and want to eventually build a team that delivers it, giving you more freedom in the long term.
Software as a Service (SaaS) – A more advanced option, but if you’ve spotted a gap in your industry, building a tool that solves a real problem can lead to serious recurring revenue.

Each business model comes with its own set of opportunities and challenges. The key is choosing one that feels aligned with your current season of life, your skill set, and your capacity. You can always layer on new offers later, but in the early stages of your business development journey, clarity and focus will get you results faster.
