How to Build an Online Business You Actually Love: What My Freedom Business Journey Has Taught Me
How to build an online business is probably one of the most googled questions by anyone who has ever sat at their desk on a Monday morning, thinking, there has to be more to life than this. I know, because I have been that person. And if you are currently in your 9 – 5, or you have just quit your 9-5 and are ready to learn how to build an online business, this post is for you.
In this post, I am going to walk you through every single online business strategy I have tried since 2016 – the ones that worked, the ones that flopped, and the ones that nearly broke me – because I think hearing a real, honest story is going to help you more than any generic advice ever could.
I will caveat this post by saying that building a freedom business is NOT a linear path. It is messy, experimental, and often uncomfortable. But underneath all of that, there are three things I wish I had known from the start – three principles that now form the entire foundation of how I teach my clients to build businesses that work.
Those three things now form the basis of my approach to building a freedom business: clarity, alignment, and aligned action. That is the core of my Freedom Model Method and the basis of everything I teach and share with my clients. And I did not arrive at it by reading it in a business book – I lived my way through every lesson the hard way, so you do not have to.

Quitting your 9-5 and going all in on an online business strategy that is built on the wrong foundations is one of the fastest ways to end up burnt out, overwhelmed, and right back where you started.
So before I walk you through my story, I want to plant this seed: the goal is not just to build a business. The goal is to build the right business – one that fits your skills, your passions, and a market that can actually pay for it. That is the overlap worth finding.
How to Build an Online Business Using Your Skills and Passions - Why Both Matter
How to build an online business that not only makes you money, but also makes you happy – starts with an honest conversation about two things: what you are good at, and what you genuinely enjoy.
I know there is a debate out there about whether you should mix passion with business. Some mentors will tell you to keep them separate so you do not build resentment towards the things you love. I respectfully disagree – as I believe it all comes down to business alignment.
Why? Building a freedom business around something you have zero enthusiasm for is one of the hardest things you will ever do.
When the inevitable challenges of building an online business come – and rest assured they will – your love for what you do is what keeps you showing up. When you build an online business purely for the money, you will hit a wall, and you will struggle to push through it.
I know this because I built what I thought was a “freedom business” around something I was not passionate about, and it felt like I was constantly banging my head against a wall. The business alignment was simply not there because I was doing it for the wrong reasons, and I felt it every single day.
That said, building an online business based on passion alone is not enough either. You also need to look at your existing skills and ask: what am I already good at that I could transfer into a new venture?
When you are first starting out, make your life easy. There is enough to learn on the online business strategy side of things without also trying to learn an entirely new craft from scratch at the same time.
The sweet spot – the place where a business alignment starts to feel natural – is where your skills and your passions overlap and where there is a market that can pay for it.

Every Online Business Strategy And Model I Have Tried Since 2016
My online business strategy has looked completely different at almost every stage of the last six years, and I think being honest about that matters. Here is the real, unfiltered version of my online business model journey:
- 2016 – Travel Blog: My first ever online business venture was a travel blog called The Ineffable Travels. I was 24, living in Italy, had travelled to nearly 30 countries, and writing was something I genuinely enjoyed. It had the passion, it had the skill – but what I did not account for was the time it took to produce content consistently alongside a full-time job, and how long it takes for blog content to rank and convert. I stopped writing after about a year and a half, which was ironically right when it started getting the most traffic. I walked away having learned the value of SEO, affiliate marketing, and how demanding content creation really is.
- 2019 – Career Coaching for Fashion Industry Candidates: I had spent 11 years working in global fashion brands and had been informally helping people get jobs for years. So I turned that into a side hustle. The problem? My ideal clients were students and junior candidates who could not afford to pay for my services. I quickly realized that being able to help someone and being able to build a sustainable business around it are two very different things. I pivoted to executive-level career coaching in partnership with someone else, made money within the first couple of months, but ultimately walked away because I was not passionate enough about the subject to make the effort worth it.
- 2020 – E-commerce Consultancy: This is the one I consider my first real business. I had spent years building five-year plans for a £380 million business at Burberry and launching subsidiaries across Europe. When lockdown hit, and my travel plans fell apart, I looked at my skills and realized I could scale that experience down to help start-up e-commerce businesses. I used LinkedIn to get clients, landed them quickly because of the brand names behind me, and genuinely loved the work. I helped a handbag brand build a wholesale channel that generated almost £200,000 in nine months. I ran workshops, created courses, offered group coaching, and built consistent five to seven-thousand-pound months within the first year. This business model gave me the freedom to go fully remote and eventually move abroad.
- The agency model: I tried this within my consultancy, and it made good money – but I absolutely hated it. Too many moving parts, too many people to manage, not enough of me actually doing the work I loved.
- 2021 – In-person events: I brought 50 women together for a live event, and it lit me up completely. I loved the energy, the community, the magic that happens in a room. Financially, though, I actually lost money on it. Loved it, but not a scalable model on its own.
- 2023 – Mental health e-commerce marketplace: Co-founded with a business partner in the US, built on a drop-ship and affiliate model. We genuinely cared about the mission – helping people find mental health solutions. But running it alongside our existing businesses started to impact both of our mental health. We had to pause it. Lesson: Mission-led businesses are powerful, but you have to be able to hold the weight of the mission without it costing you your well-being.

The Freedom Model Method: The Online Business Strategy That Changed Everything
Business alignment is not a concept you’ll read about very often – it is something I learned through burning out inside a business that looked successful from the outside. My online business strategy in my e-commerce consultancy was working. The money was coming in. But over time, I started taking on projects and clients that were not in alignment with what I actually wanted, and it drained the life out of me.
That process of going through all of those experiments, all of those lessons, is what led me to create my signature coaching method: the Freedom Model Method and this is now the core of what I teach clients through my 1:1 coaching, my online course programmes and my free resources.
The Freedom Model Method is based on three principles:
- Clarity – being genuinely clear on what you want your life and business to look like, not just the revenue goals, but the lifestyle, the freedom, the day-to-day reality of it
- Alignment – making sure the business model you build is in alignment with your skills, your passions, and the market that can pay for it – not just what looks good or what someone else told you to do
- Aligned Action – taking action that is consistent with those two things, because the wrong action taken confidently is still the wrong action
When those three things are not in place, the freedom business you are building, in my experience, and what I’ve seen with my clients, is not actually free at all. I was drowning in work, working more hours than I ever had in my 9 – 5, and wondering why I had quit to do this. The answer was that I had skipped steps. I had not been clear enough, I had drifted out of business alignment, and I was taking action that looked productive but was not moving me toward the life I actually wanted.
Quitting your 9 – 5 is only the start of building your online business, not the finish line. The real work is in building something that is so naturally in business alignment with who you are that it does not feel like you are forcing it every single day.
Find your own business alignment by implementing the The Freedom Model Method where you’ll learn how to build your online business based on your existing skills, passions and freedom business goals.
Your Freedom Business Strategy
Here are the questions I get asked most when it comes to how to build an online business and finding your version of a freedom business:
1. How do I know which online business model is right for me when I want to quit my 9 – 5? Start by looking at the overlap between your existing skills, what you are genuinely passionate about, and whether the market can pay for it. That triangle is your starting point for real business alignment.
2. Do I need to be passionate about my online business idea to make it work? I would not say every passion needs to become a business – keep some things just for you. But when you are a solopreneur building something alone, that extra layer of motivation from doing something you love is what carries you through the hard days.
3. What is the Freedom Model Method, and how does it support my online business strategy? It is my signature framework built from six years of real experience across multiple business models. Clarity plus alignment plus aligned action equals freedom. It is the foundation of everything I teach and the method I use to help people build freedom businesses that actually work.
4. How do I avoid burning out when building an online business after quitting my 9 – 5? Be ruthlessly selective about what you take on and who you work with. Just because something makes you money does not mean it is the right model for you. Business alignment is not a nice-to-have – it is what makes the difference between a business that energizes you and one that slowly drains you.
5. How long does it take to build a successful freedom business online? There is no single answer, but I will tell you this: the businesses that lasted and felt good were the ones built on the right foundations from the start – skills, passion, market fit, and a clear online business strategy. The trial and error is part of it. Give yourself permission to learn as you go.

I'm Sophie
Online business coach, podcast host, mental health advocate, speaker, founder of TINAH, community builder, full-time digital nomad, and general trailblazing, rule breaker…
I tried to live a “normal” life: I spent 11+ years working my way up in the fashion industry, working for brands like Ralph Lauren and Burberry. I had the apartment in the city, I lived for going out at the weekends, spent money on designer bags and holidays – until I realized this lifestyle DID NOT FULFIL ME – I was waking up with anxiety every day – surviving, but definitely not thriving.
So I quit. I left my 9-to-5 behind to start an online business that supported the lifestyle I actually wanted. Now that looks like slow mornings, daily beach walks, co-working with like-minded entrepreneurs, yoga, meditation, and lots of social connections.
Since 2020, I’ve built multiple online business offers – from online business coaching and consulting to online courses, digital products, and a mental health marketplace – all while travelling the world and living life, and earning money on my own terms.
Now… I’m on a mission to help more people break free from lives that don’t feel good for them and create more freedom through starting and growing an online business.
