Marketing Strategies For A Small Business Don't Have To Be Complex To Be Effective.

I get it. Marketing can feel like a full-time job in itself. There are a million different platforms, algorithms to navigate, content formats to test, and so much noise out there. For years, I felt completely overwhelmed trying to figure out the “right way” to do small business marketing. But the truth is: you don’t need to do it all. You just need to focus on what actually works for you.

In this post, I’m breaking down the exact small business marketing strategies that have helped me stay consistent, grow my visibility and most importantly – create more freedom. This is about simplified marketing that works, without burning yourself out.

Define a Marketing Strategy That Works For Your Business

If you feel like you’re constantly spinning your wheels trying to be on every platform, it’s time to reassess. The most effective marketing strategies for a small business start with clarity: What are you actually trying to achieve? And who are you speaking to?

You can’t do it all – and you don’t need to. Your audience isn’t on every platform, and not every platform is the right one for you.

For example, if your ideal clients are older or retired, TikTok probably isn’t worth your time. Facebook or Reddit even might be a better space.

It all comes back to knowing your people and creating small business marketing strategies that meet them where they are.

If you need help figuring this out, make sure you enrol in The Freedom Model Method Foundations – it’ll help you map out your ideal client and align your marketing efforts to what actually matters.

Lean Into Platforms That Match Your Energy

One of the most empowering shifts I made in my marketing was choosing platforms that actually align with how I love to consume content.

If you’re someone who listens to podcasts daily or saves blog posts to read with your morning coffee, lean into that.

There’s no rule that says you have to be dancing on video if that makes you cringe.

When you create content in a format that energises you rather than drains you, it lands better – because you’re showing up in your best energy. Your audience can feel that. It becomes more sustainable.

Marketing doesn’t have to feel heavy when you’re working with your natural flow instead of fighting against it.

Start With Their Problem, Not Your Product

When we talk about small business marketing strategies, a lot of people jump straight to tactics. But what matters most is your message.

You have to start with the problem your audience is already Googling. What keeps them up at night? What are they searching for when they stumble across your content?

That’s where you start. Then you build your marketing strategy from there. Think about:

  • What questions do your clients ask you over and over again?
  • What language do they use when they talk about their struggles?
  • What kind of content do they actually consume? Blogs? Podcasts? Downloads?

Creating simplified marketing means focusing on what they need, not just what you feel like posting.

Understand TOFU, MOFU, BOFU and How They Fit Together

One of the best ways to simplify your small business marketing strategy is to map your content to the buyer journey.

Think of it in three stages:

TOFU (top of funnel), MOFU (middle of funnel), and BOFU (bottom of funnel).

TOFU is all about visibility and reach – think search platforms like Pinterest or Google, and social platforms like Instagram or TikTok. This is where you capture attention.

MOFU is where you build trust. This is where long-form content like blogs, newsletters, and podcasts come into play. You go deeper here.

And BOFU is where you convert – through your sales pages, email sequences, and offers.

When your content is spread across these stages with intention, it creates a seamless journey for your audience. The Freedom Model Method Foundations helps you build this out step-by-step.

Use Long Form Content to Build Long-Lasting Visibility

Let’s be honest. Social media can feel like a hamster wheel.

You create, post, engage, repeat. And if you’re not showing up consistently, the algorithm punishes you. And the issue is because short-form social videos are bingeable they do not last very long.

I spent years caught in this cycle, and it completely drained me.

That’s why I started shifting towards long-form content: things like blog posts (like this one), My podcast The Remote CEO life, and evergreen SEO-driven pins driving to my content on Pinterest.

It’s one of the smartest small business marketing strategies if you want to build a consistent pipeline without being glued to your phone.

It does take longer to see results than social media – but the impact is more sustainable. It works while you sleep. It compounds over time. And it attracts people who are actually searching for what you do.

If you’re serious about building a business that gives you freedom, not just followers, long form content needs to be part of your plan. Again, The Freedom Model Method Foundations will help you map this out.

Don’t Sleep On Email Marketing

I know people love to talk about algorithms and engagement, but email marketing is still one of the most powerful small business marketing strategies. It’s a direct line to your people – no algorithm, no noise, just you and your message.

This is a direct gateway into your ideal customers space.

I recommend starting simple: one email a week, even just a monthly round-up to begin with.

Share value. Talk about what you’re working on. Invite people into your offers. But most importantly, start building that list now.

Not sure how to grow your list without relying on Instagram? That’s where blogs and long-form content come in. By creating value-packed content that answers your audience’s biggest questions, and including a juicy opt-in, you can start growing your list without dancing on Reels.

Combine 3-5 Channels That You LOVE to Maximise ROI

Simplified marketing doesn’t mean doing less of what works. It means being strategic about what you choose to focus on.

Research shows that being present across 3-5 channels brings the best ROI. But beyond that, the returns drop off.

For me, the most effective small business marketing channel strategies right now are:

  • LinkedIn: (leaning in to my natural writing ability) – still bingeable, but less exhausting for me to create than REELs because I’m leaning in to my own strengths.
  • Pinterest: (long-lasting SEO optimized pins directing to my blog) – this is the MOST underrated marketing channel, master this channel and you’re in for BIG $$$ and long-lasting clicks to your content.
  • Podcast: (deeper connections with my audience & trust building) – I get to showcase how I actually am in a conversation on my podcast and give direct call to actions to my offers. This has been super powerful for me as a relationship builder with potential clients.

Each of these plays a different role, and together they build a marketing ecosystem that works even when I’m not online.

Yours will probably look very different, and even mine looked different a year ago, but that’s ok as there is no one-sized fits all approach to marketing for small businesses. It’s all about what works for you!

Ready To Create Your Own Small Business Marketing Strategy That Actually Works FOR You Not Against You?

If you’re tired of being overwhelmed by marketing, the answer isn’t to do more. It’s to do less, but better. Work smarter, in alignment with your natural strengths and the way you consume.

The best marketing strategies for a small business focus on:

  • Knowing your goals and your audience
  • Starting with the problems they’re already trying to solve
  • Creating long-form, value-driven content
  • Growing your email list with intention
  • Picking 3-5 marketing channels and sticking with them

Marketing doesn’t need to be a daily grind. You can build a system that works for you, attracts the right people, and gives you space to breathe.

If you’re ready to build that kind of business, enrol in The Freedom Model Method Foundations and let’s get started.

I tried to live a “normal” life: I spent 11+ years working my way up in the fashion industry, working for brands like Ralph Lauren and Burberry. I had the apartment in the city, I lived for going out at the weekends, spent money on designer bags and holidays – until I realized this lifestyle DID NOT FULFIL MEI was waking up with anxiety every day – surviving, but definitely not thriving.

So I quit. I left my 9-to-5 behind to start an online business that supported the lifestyle I actually wanted. Now that looks like slow mornings, daily beach walks, co-working with like-minded entrepreneurs, yoga, meditation, and lots of social connections.

Since 2020, I’ve built multiple online business offers – from online business coaching and consulting to online courses, digital products, and a mental health marketplace – all while travelling the world and living life, and earning money on my own terms.

Now… I’m on a mission to help more people break free from lives that don’t feel good for them and create more freedom through starting and growing an online business.
