What Launching My E-Commerce Business Taught Me About Starting from Scratch
It took me well over a year to launch my e-commerce business TINAH, and to start selling anything it took a further 6 months – building a business that actually makes money online takes time, and that’s exactly why I coach the way I do now.
If I’m honest I never planned for it to take more than a year to launch TINAH, my second business (and first-ever e-commerce brand). But life had other plans. Unexpected setbacks, personal growth, and moments of complete “WTF am I doing?” slowed things down.
And you know what? I’m so glad it did.
Because it forced me to take my own advice – the same advice I now give to the women I coach inside The Freedom Model Method: If you want to build a business that is sustainable and long-lasting, it can not be rushed! It needs to be thought through, planned and tweaked as you go along.
Starting A Business Is A Marathon, Not A Sprint
TINAH – short for Time Is Not a Healer – is the mental well-being marketplace I’ve quietly built in the background for over a year alongside my first coaching business. It’s a passion project and the most personal business I’ve created, inspired by my own mental health journey and desire to create a platform that actually helps people feel better.
Something I desperately needed when I went through my own mental health crisis!
And while it’s technically an e-commerce brand, this process wasn’t about learning how to “grow a Shopify business” – it was about building something with intention, from the ground up.
Shopify just happened to be the vessel we used to build it!
How I Built My E-Commerce Business TINAH
I followed the exact same steps I now teach inside my signature program – The Freedom Model Method – a simple, foundational process that applies whether you’re building a product-based biz, a coaching offer, or a digital product suite.
Here’s what the starting a new business journey looked like:
1. Ideation: Getting clarity first
Before I did anything, I had to answer the big questions:
Who is this for?
What am I really offering?
What makes it different?
Is there real demand here?
Skipping this step is why so many business ideas fail before they even start. You need clarity before you can create.
2. Setup: Turning the vision into something real
This was all about choosing the right model, sourcing products, researching suppliers, and figuring out what platform and tools I’d use to actually build the business. I didn’t rush this. I wanted strong foundations – even if it meant a slower start.
3. Brand building: Making people feel something
I knew I wanted TINAH to stand for something. That meant creating a brand identity that resonated – not just with others, but with me. If your brand doesn’t feel like you, you won’t want to show up for it.
4. Launching: Done is better than perfect
We eventually launched in soft mode – slower, quieter, more intentionally than I expected. But that gave us the space to adjust, gather feedback, and evolve. A huge lesson: your “launch” isn’t one day. It’s a phase.
5. Selling: Where the real learning happens
After launch, the work really began. Understanding the customer journey, optimising the site for conversions, and building awareness without relying solely on social media taught me so much about what it means to build a sustainable business (not just a shop).
Advice I'd Give You If You're Just Starting Your Business
If you’ve got an idea, but you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure where to begin – I get it. You have to just go for it! Nobody else is going to start the business for you!
I’ve been there, sitting on my idea, that I know is amazing, but I’m too scared to do anything about it incase I fail, or don’t know how to make it a success. So have my clients. And to that now I say – so what?
So what if it’s not a success – you tried! You will never know if it could be a success if you don’t try!
The only way you can fail at something is by not doing it at all, everything else can be a lesson for you to use in order to make whatever business idea you’re working on a success! So TRY…
And if you don’t know how to start a business – learn! We’re in 2025 there’s so many amazing resources online that can teach you.
That’s why I created a clear, easy-to-follow framework inside The Freedom Model Method – my signature hybrid coaching program designed to help you launch a business that supports your lifestyle, not swallows it whole.
This program is for you if:
You’re multi-passionate and struggling to pick a business model
You’ve got ideas, but no structure or roadmap
You want to build a freedom-first business – whether it’s coaching, products, courses or a blend
You’re over short-form content and always “showing up” online, and ready to build something long-term
Ready To Start A Business?
Building TINAH reminded me that there’s no “one way” to build a business. There’s only the way that works for you – and I’m here to help you figure out what that looks like.

I'm Sophie
Online business coach, podcast host, mental health advocate, speaker, founder of TINAH, community builder, full-time digital nomad, and general trailblazing, rule breaker…
I tried to live a “normal” life: I spent 11+ years working my way up in the fashion industry, working for brands like Ralph Lauren and Burberry. I had the apartment in the city, I lived for going out at the weekends, spent money on designer bags and holidays – until I realized this lifestyle DID NOT FULFIL ME – I was waking up with anxiety every day – surviving, but definitely not thriving.
So I quit. I left my 9-to-5 behind to start an online business that supported the lifestyle I actually wanted. Now that looks like slow mornings, daily beach walks, co-working with like-minded entrepreneurs, yoga, meditation, and lots of social connections.
Since 2020, I’ve built multiple online business offers – from online business coaching and consulting to online courses, digital products, and a mental health marketplace – all while travelling the world and living life, and earning money on my own terms.
Now… I’m on a mission to help more people break free from lives that don’t feel good for them and create more freedom through starting and growing an online business.
